Why conservation in Mongolia

Four reasons it matters, globally

01

Protecting Grassland Ecosystems

Mongolia's grasslands cover 80% of the country and are one of the world's largest intact grassland ecosystems.

02

Safeguarding Wildlife

Last-chance habitat for argali sheep, gazelles, snow leopards, saiga antelope, demoiselle cranes, and cinereous vultures.

03

Supporting Livelihoods

One-third of Mongolia's population depends on the grasslands as nomadic herders.

04

Mitigating Climate Change

Grasslands are significant carbon sinks, absorbing large amounts of carbon and stabilizing the regional climate.

Global context

A link in a global exchange

Safeguarding Mongolia's grasslands, deserts, and alpine habitats strengthens climate resilience, protects water sources, and maintains migratory corridors that link Asia. Mongolia is party to the Convention on Biological Diversity, the 2016 Paris Agreement, and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

PFP initiatives led by the Enduring Earth partnership are underway or completed across the world, including ARPA for Life (Brazil), Forever Costa Rica, Heritage Colombia, Bhutan for Life, and Canada's Great Bear Rainforest PFP. Enduring Earth is supporting 14 PFP projects across 12 countries.
